What is Cosmic Horror? Pt.1
The Cosmic Horror Kickstarter as progressed at speed - We’ve unlocked a lot of additional content for the rulebook now, meaning the book is likely going to weigh in at over 250 pages!
So, you’ll now get a bookmark, lots of additional scenarios and Solo Play rules!
We’ve talked a lot about the models we’ve designed for Cosmic Horror - but what about the rules?
We believe we have designed a game that is truly unique in tabletop wargaming, so we are going to break it down into some posts, to go alongside our upcoming gameplay videos!
So, let's start with the basics!
What are Protagonists, Subjects and what statistics do we use in Cosmic Horror?
The Stat profile shouldn’t come as a surprise to those of you that are familiar with wargaming.

You’ll notice a couple of things we’ve done a little differently. Firstly, there are no points values in this game. We have achieved balance by assigning an Assembly (our term for warband/army etc.) Capacity, where each subject takes up certain number of ‘slots’ in your roster (more on this in a future post), and a Carry Capacity, which dictates how much a Subject can carry.
Speaking of Subjects - all models are defined as Subjects, Protagonists and Entities. In this article we will talk about Protagonists and Subjects and how they differ.
Actions are performed by Spending Resolve. Subjects have a Resolve of 2 and Protagonists have a Resolve of 3.
Most Actions have a Resolve cost of 1, but some specialist Actions have a Cost of 2 or more (again, more on this later!).
Protagonists lead your Assembly, the rest of which will be composed of Assembly Subjects and Unaligned Subjects.

Protagonists have access to a number of special rules and importantly Protagonists Strengths, which can give a player powerful abilities to use in game. These have to be selected before a game - choose wisely, as these are typically situational.

As a campaign progresses and your Protagonist and Subject is wounded or removed as a casualty during a game, they can also gain permanent Weaknesses!
Subjects are typically specialists in a particular field, and their Special Rules reflect this. As you can see, the F.B.S.T. Field Agent is geared towards violence and countering the Mythos, whereas The Order of the Salted Tongue Museum Curator can manipulate the Mythos Deck and even create temporary Mythos Locations.

Tomorrow, we will be discussing the Mythos Deck, Entities and the Avatars of the Old ones…
